In the 2007 NCAA tournamnent, Xavier (8) faced off against The Ohio State (1) in a 2nd rd battle between the Ohio schools. This was a much-anticipated game for Xavier Nation because of the return of Thad Matta, and going up against the potential #1 pick in the NBA Draft, Greg Oden. Xavier looked like they were about to upset the #1 seed Ohio State, leading by 11 with 7 minutes left, until the Buckeyes rallied back from this 11 deficit to tie the game and send it into overtime, where they pulled away and beat the muskies 78-71.

This was a heartbreaking loss for Xavier fans, not only for suffering the lead so late in the game, but because of the controversial ending that took place. Prior to Lewis’s game-tying shot, Buckeye Greg Oden shoved (3:05 of the video) a Xavier player, Justin Cage, in the back and onto the floor. Had an intentional foul been called, Xavier would have been awarded two foul shots and ball possession. Instead, a regular personal foul was called. Subsequently, Xavier missed the second free throw, allowing Lewis to shoot the game-tying 3. Despite the loss and the controversy surrounding it, this was one great basketball game. The “non-call” is a moment Xavier Nation will always remember, but will also remember the terrific game by Justin Cage, 25 PTS, 6 REB.

If you can bare, the last 3 minutes can be seen below:
